In the contemporary world, the moment a kid touches his/her early 20’s or finishes his/her graduation he wants to fly away from the nest, no matter how much his/her parents persuade the kid to stay. But what he/she doesn’t understand is that the world that seems to be so fancy in the movies or soap operas is unlike the real world. Though with the passage of time the reality dawns upon him/her and he/she too becomes possessive and protective of his/her own kids. But what if one day the parents themselves sue their kid in the court for living in the house. The same happened with this couple but what’s intriguing is why would any parent do so.
The Decision
It was a usual Tuesday morning which had turned into one of the historic days of that year with the most unusual decisions taken till date. Above all, the decision was supported by the majority of people in and around the area and how often does that happen? It wasn’t an easy decision, at least for the parents, but a necessary one to be taken. So what was that decision that came in the limelight and why was that decision so necessary for the parents and the rest of the world too?
A Perfect Family
They were a perfect family anyone could dream of, Mark and Christina Rotondo was living the dream with a perfect job that helped them meet the two ends and they managed to do a little bit of saving. Their happiness multiplied when they had their first kid, Michael. They had weaved millions of dreams around the baby. They preplanned almost everything without having a clue that one day their world would turn upside down.
Young Micheal
The time flew really quick that they didn’t realize the little Michael who was trying to balance his foot had started to ride motorbikes and when his alphabet books got replaced by alpha, betas of mathematics. Soon he was going to finish his graduation and had millions of plans ahead. But the plans usually do not get executed the way we want. So what would be the difference that could change Michael’s life?
High-School Ends!
As soon as he started his graduation, there were constant talks and seminars that included discussions on advanced subjects that kids could take. Michael too was curious about his upcoming life and job that he would be doing. But most importantly he was excited about his independent life.
Moving Out
As his graduation day came nearer he couldn’t hold his excitement. He had already started packing his bags and essentials. His parents were somewhat sad about him moving out because they couldn’t just let him out in this cruel world. But seeing him happy was their major goal no matter even if it meant watching him moving out. So they had put a stone on their heart and happily agreed for the same.
Graduation Day
Finally, his graduation day came and the couple’s excitement was on cloud nine. Both accompanied him to the ceremony, and as he stepped onto the podium to receive his degree, both of them had tears rolling down their cheeks, after all, they had been imagining this particular day since ages, and they clapped endlessly when he threw his graduation cap up in the sky with the rest of the crowd.
Hiding Emotions
They hid their sadness and started packing as they reached home. They could see how excited and enthusiastic Michael was to start his new life. On the other hand, more than the studies and job, he was excited about his newly found freedom where there will be no hindrance and he can eat, sleep and do whatever he wanted to according to his convenience.
Boarding The Train
The next day they reached the station before time to exclude the possibility of missing out the train. The train, as expected reached on time. Parents helped Michael board the train and said goodbye with heavy hearts and hid their tears as the train left the platform.
Hard Days
For the next few days, it was hard for them to concentrate on anything, all they could think for several days was Michael and his well being. They desperately waited for his call every day and became anxious when he didn’t call any specific day. But then, they did understand that the city and the culture were new for him and he was trying his level best to fit in.
Occasional Calls
A few months after Michael had moved out, he started calling occasionally. But these calls were mostly demanding money for one or the other thing. At first, the couple readily gave the amount he would ask for because they knew how terrible were the wages and the expenses were high no matter how minimal he would try to spend, it would empty the pockets.
Frequent Demands
When these demands became quite frequent, it grew suspicion in their minds after a certain time. Now they were curious about what Michael was doing with his salary. Though multiple thoughts ran into their minds, they brushed off these thoughts and tried to remain positive.
Strange Thoughts
No matter how much they neglected the other thoughts, they became more prominent with the time. Whenever they used to ask about the money he would generally brush aside the question giving some lame excuses. It was then that they knew something was not right. What was Michael hiding from his parents?
Finding The Truth
They were now thinking about how to find out what was wrong, no matter how much they tried to avoid but still, they were afraid that Michael might have got trapped in some bad company and might need help to get out of the same. But to know what exactly might have happened remained a big question. Would they be able to find out?
Coming Home
After a lot of persuasion and assurance, the parents convinced him to come home for the holidays. They had firm thoughts in their minds that no matter how hard it would be, they would bring out the truth. But would Michael confess? If yes, how?
Wait Ended
When Michael came home, their wait finally ended. Now all they had to do was make Michael sit and tell them the truth. But was that easy? It might not be that easy in the case of Michael because it had been months and he was feeding them lies and nothing else.
Hiding The Truth
So after having dinner and doing the normal chit chat they indirectly asked him about his job, life and also about the money that he had taken. His father joked that now as he is working he will return the money with interest and shockingly he agreed for the same. Why was Michael telling lies over lies?
Answer At Any Cost
When they had tried their best and still couldn’t get an answer, they thought of changing the plan and get the answer by hook or crook. So after dinner, they made him sit in front of them for the serious talk and were determined to get the answer. Would Michael tell the truth now or stick to lies as before?
Unseen Trouble
After all this time, they had somewhat lost their trust in him so whatever excuses he made didn’t really affect the confrontation. Until he started crying like a kid in front of them and didn’t stop. Even they both tried consoling him several times. But why did he start crying? Was he in some big trouble and would the parents be able to pull him out from the same?
Crying Like A Baby
After hours of consoling when Michael stopped crying, he told his parents that he had lost his job and according to him it wasn’t his fault at all. He worked tirelessly for 5 days but when he was asked to work on Saturdays too, he refused and for this petty reason he was sacked from his job. This came as an unanticipated truth they could ever expect.
Support
So they did what any other parent would have done. They offered him to move back into the house to take his time and get prepared for the next opportunity. They knew how hard it would be for a kid who had just entered his twenties to get ready for this harsh world which spared no one. Without having a clue that this will be a decision that they would regret for the rest of their lives.
Time Flew
Soon the days changed into weeks and in a blink, the kid that they had taken in to prepare for the world had a son of himself. Time might have changed but one thing remained constant and that was his unemployment. For almost a decade he was jobless and now even when he was fathering a kid, he still was least considerate about getting a job.
Careless Behavior
It was eight years back when Michael had some real job and after that, he never considered to get one. This made his parents anxious, they were earning well but still at this age they expected their son to support them and in this case, they were constantly supporting him. Now it was the time to put their foot down.
Understanding Responsibilities
They wanted him to understand his responsibilities and expected to put a share in the household. Being jobless for several years, he didn’t even try to contribute to the household chores. When the parents saw things are getting out of control they knew that they had to take some action. But what they did was unanticipated.
Notices
So his father gave him a notice dated February 2 which stated “After a discussion with your mother, we have decided that you must leave this house immediately, you have 14 days to vacate. You will not be allowed to return. We will take whatever actions are necessary to enforce this decision.” It was just the starting of the string of letters that he would be receiving but he didn’t care to respond, let alone taking an action.
Stubborn
He had become so stubborn that even after receiving notices from his parents he didn’t move. He had become so habitual of not working that now he didn’t intend to do it at all. Every time when his parents confronted him he would always brush off saying that no one would take him with this work history.
Unanswered Notices
To make him understand, his parents notified him to give rent if he wished to stay in the house, but even after so many notices he would not give a single penny and how would he have managed the same because he didn’t have a job nor intended to have one in the near future. So his parents had to take some firm decisions in order to make him realize his responsibilities.
Actions
When they could see no effect of the notices and warnings on Michael, they decided to take a step which otherwise no parent would have taken but then it was for his own betterment. So they decided to appeal in the court to evict their son. Would they be able to win and teach their son a lesson?

The subject that could have been resolved in the four walls of the house was now the nation’s headline. The father, Mark Rotondo shared letters in the court which stated “‘You have heretofore been our guest and there is no lease or agreement that gives you any right to stay here without our consent,” and gave 30 more days to vacate but he was oblivious to everything happening. This case had started to get on the nerves of the parents because of the unaccepted limelight it got. So would they take the case back or continue the battle?
Necessary Actions
The letter added, “We will take whatever actions are necessary to enforce this decision.”He had been headstrong about not moving out of the house but when he denied paying rent, it was the last straw.” The son ignored their polite behavior but the final blow was when he denied to move out of the house or pay the rent after all the notices that he had received. So they notified him that he had been evicted. What would Michael do now, would he move out?
Financial Help
And, of course, they are parents they wanted Michael to learn and understand his responsibilities but behind this cold face they had to put up, they had a soft heart too, so they even tried him to finance for his house initially so that gradually he would realize his responsibilities and find some decent work to do.
Tried Every Way
But if a kid is so headstrong like Michael, what would his parents do and to what extent? Somedays, out of frustration his father would say tauntingly, “There are jobs available even for those with a poor work history like you. Get one– you have to work!” but Michael had become so comfortable in upstate New York that he didn’t find work even out of shame.
Unbearable Condition
So, when things went out of hands and the parents were unable to tackle the same they knocked at the court’s door but all in vain. He claimed,” he has never been expected to contribute to household expenses, or assisted with chores and the maintenance of the premises, and claims that this is simply a component of his living agreement”.He too, added that his parents don’t provide food or do his laundry, which was indeed ridiculous for a 30-year-old-man to say.
Unrealistic Claims
Michael also claimed that he should be given at least 6 months’ time to vacate the place which was discarded by the court saying it is an outrageous demand. To which Micheal responded that it was outrageous to evict him too. Regardless of all the questions, he was put through, he was determined on being the same way he was.
Not Anytime Sooner
Even after so many hearings, he stood strong on not moving out of his parents’ house and had decided to take the matter to a higher court. Here the parents were doing the best they could because no matter what, he was their own flesh and blood and hence tried every way to support him.
Endless Support
In the most recent letter, concerning his car, they offered him money to fix it so that it can be taken off from their property to which he denied. Even the neighbors were feeling concerned but mostly for the parents than Michael.
The Previous Company
This was not the first time that he had faced court, previously too, he had filed a case against the local Best Buy for forcing him to work on Saturdays and for the same he was receiving nearly $340,000 from the big box store as a penalty.
Claims Discarded
But this trick didn’t work every time, thereafter when he claimed his rights to due process, it was discarded in the family court and the case was then thrown out last year in November. But he didn’t take from the same and continued to be careless like before.
Fighting For His Own
This time, in court he served as his own lawyer and was expecting to get away like previous times with another handsome amount of money and this time from his own parents before the court discarded this case which made him furious and decided to go higher court to appeal for the same.
Protected Shelter
It had also been reported that he had never lived on his own instead of those months when he had moved out after his graduation. Practically he had never experienced any sort of hardships in his life before and had always lived under the protective shield of his parents.
Not On Talking Terms
Regardless of all the help that Michael’s parents were providing him, he had been so ungrateful and had stopped talking to them as if it was their mistake that he didn’t have a job but even after all this, they tried their every bit to make him independent and successful like any other parents would have done. But instead, he had cut all the ties with his parents and hardly talked living under the same roof.
Will He Mend His Ways?
What he didn’t understand was that whatever had been done was just for his own benefit and to make him realize his duties as a son and a father, which the stubborn man-child didn’t want to admit. So on Tuesday, the court sided the parents and gave its decision in their favor. To this decision, he stated that he didn’t want to live there anymore. Hoping one day he will realize why it was done, he will mend his ways and get back on talking terms with his parents again.
