The Uber driver and her passenger are merrily singing along to a jam on the car stereo, while they head to an apartment block. But when they get there, it seems a bit familiar. A creeping sense of horror comes over the driver: there’s something very strange going on here…
Well, when you drive an Uber, you’re going to gather a few odd stories. And generally when something weird happens, you just have to smile and carry on. That’s how you get to be a five-star driver for the service. But sometimes, you get an experience that’s just too bizarre for words, and this one is a doozy.
That’s what happened to Breanna, a young woman who picked up another lady in her late 20s from the airport. In normal circumstances this might have made for a pleasant trip. Two girls sharing a few tunes: an easy few bucks made. But while she drove, Bree got a big surprise. And she shared the whole story with Twitter.
Now Bree’s not the only Uber driver with a tale. One of her peers told the story of giving two people a ride after a Halloween party. They were dressed as Spider-Man and Batman, said nothing for the whole two-hour ride, and scared the pants off the driver. Then they got out in the middle of nowhere — and paid a $200 tip!
And that’s nothing compared to the person who was hired by a couple after a wedding. They were also pretty quiet; at least, they were until the driver realized that their making out had progressed to something more serious. After thinking it through, the driver decided the best thing was to let them get on with it, and they scored a nice tip too!
Another driver picked up a couple of drunks at three in the morning. One made a crazy request for the driver’s wallet, claiming he’d left his own license in it — and yes, we know that makes no sense. Happily, the driver happened to have an old wallet kicking around the car. So he popped a dollar in it and handed it over. The man grabbed it, took a look, and exclaiming that the driver was remarkably broke, vamoosed!
Another Uber driver had a more scary moment, when a drunk held a knife to him and attempted to carry out a robbery. But his friend paid the fare and told the driver not to worry because the guy was “just crazy”. His buddy talked the would-be felon out of the car and asked the driver not to get the cops involved because the passenger was not long out of prison.
Less threatening was the passenger who asked if the driver used perfume. The driver said no, but they had some air freshener if that was any use? The passenger demanded that the windows were lowered to “air out the car.” They then doused themselves with essential oils, which stunk out the vehicle for two days afterwards!
Another drunk shared with their Uber driver all the secrets of making sausage. Apparently, he planned to make it his retirement hustle. So he shared with the driver details of meats and tools and methods. Then he said, “You should never trust someone who knows how to make sausage, you might disappear.” Scary! But far from making sausage meat out of the driver, he handed over a $100 tip and left.
One female driver did not enjoy picking up a middle-aged man. He straight away said he wanted a new Uber, with a male driver, because he didn’t trust her not to get into an accident. This was particularly upsetting for the driver because she’d driven for more than six years without a single mishap.
But the drivers themselves are not always great. One passenger recalled on Reddit that they’d had an Uber driver who simply didn’t want to wait in a queue — so he mounted the sidewalk. He claimed that it was an “Uber lane.” By great luck, he didn’t actually hit any pedestrians.
But that guy was a genius compared to a woman who took another Redditor for a ride. She moved into a lane where she was driving completely the wrong way — with a flood of cars coming straight towards her. If that wasn’t bad enough, she wasn’t even heading in the right direction: she’d managed to get completely lost.
Still, at least that driver managed to stay awake. What? Yep, another Uber nightmare happened when the driver took an unplanned nap and ran straight into another vehicle in its path. The driver then decided to do a runner, stranding his fare by the side of the road. There was a silver lining though: the doubtless-traumatized passenger reportedly later received $500 in Uber credits.
Meanwhile, another Uber customer didn’t even make it to the status of “passenger.” Nope, this one didn’t even get picked up! Their Uber driver gave someone else a ride instead, and when the stranded traveler phoned his missing driver, he simply handed them over to the person who he’d picked up. Reportedly, Uber was not sympathetic this time and refused the user compensation.
So what kind of driver was Bree? Let’s find out. She was only a part-time Uber driver, but a full-time sensation online. You can find her on Instagram, where she goes by msixelaa and has more than 100,000 followers. Or on Twitter, where nearly 50,000 enjoy her tweets. She also goes by Alexis, but we’ll stick with Bree — or UberBae, and here’s the tale of how she won that name.
So Bree had been signed up by Uber only a month before. And she told Complex website in 2017, “I had just tried it for the last two days like, on some, ‘Let me see what this is about. I have the app, I’m in the car. Why not? My man’s away. Let me do it.’”
So Bree’s tale does in fact begin with her man being away. He’d said to her that he was going to travel to New York to see his mom. She was having a stay in hospital. Sounds like a good son, right? So he was all packed, and Bree spent the night at his place before he flew out.
The next morning the two lovers parted. They each got into their respective cars, and for all Bree knew, her guy was on his way out to the airport. After all, he’d put out baggage in the morning. To all intents and purposes he was packed and ready for a trip away to New York.
So Bree set off for her stint as an Uber driver. And that took her to the airport too. She was hired by a woman there, who put an apartment complex into the GPS system. The woman was excited, she said. She was going to see her boyfriend, and it had been a long time. Bree sympathized. Her man had, after all, just left on a trip himself.
But something weird did strike Bree when the woman entered the address. She had put in the address for the whole complex, but no specific number for the apartment. Oh well, she’d probably give more details when they got nearer. As Bree made her way into town from the airport, she didn’t worry too much about it.
So the two struck up a conversation as they went along. The woman told Bree all about her life, and Bree shared her water that was sitting on the backseat. The Uberbae let her followers know, “I even let her use the aux cord,” so the woman would be choosing the tunes.
The woman chose plenty of romantic songs, and Bree was just loving them. She could really relate to the tunes, because they made her think about her partner. So Bree was getting down to the music, as she tweeted, “like yasssssss.” It all seemed like a great start to the day, when she’d expected to be lonely.
Having successfully navigated the city streets, the pair eventually pulled up at the entrance to the apartment complex that the woman had put into Bree’s GPS. And it looked kind of familiar. Bree said to the woman, “My boyfriend lives out here.” Yes, it was the very same complex.
The woman had the number of the apartment building she actually wanted sent to her while Bree sneaked her vehicle into the complex through an open exit gate. So, as Bree tweeted, “She’s like, ‘Okay, I got the number.’ At this point I’m like, ‘Okay.’ We’re counting the building numbers down as we are riding through the buildings.”
But as the two women drew near to a building that Bree knew very well, her “stomach start[ed] to drop.” Oh no! And there, right outside of the building is something that shouldn’t be there. It’s her boyfriend’s car. Where was the boyfriend, though? On his way out to help with the bags…
You could say that Bree was a bit upset. She noted on Twitter, “And the Devil rose up out of me like, ‘Are you… [kidding] right now?’” When her boyfriend saw her, he didn’t hang around to explain. He tried to disappear back into the building, but he could not escape the rage of Bree.
Well, Bree proceeded to give her man a hiding that he probably still remembers to this day. Yet the other woman did not just stand and watch: she ran up and started hitting Bree in a sterling defense of “her man.” It’s fair to say that this didn’t meet with Bree’s approval, but it had an upside for UberBae.
See, the two-timing boyfriend had apparently come out to help the other woman with her luggage. But he hadn’t been able to get there because of the furious Bree, who was battering him. And the woman didn’t seem to be aware. Bree noted on Twitter, “She [was] willing to wear the same outfit for God knows how long to protect her man.”
The intervention of the other woman didn’t please Bree at all. She rounded on the other lady, and now the target of her rage would change. As for the boyfriend, she tweeted, “[He] just seemed like he was protecting her when trying to break it up, and I’m his girl. Ain’t that crazy? She was talking crazy at this point.”
Imagine the scene. The two women are trying to duke it out, while the guy is holding back one of them, not very successfully. But Bree’s not going to stand around and let the other woman slap her about. She heads back toward her car, and although the other woman “charged” at her, she manages to get back behind the wheel.
Poor Bree. She explained to Twitter that she’d had enough. She wrote, “At this point my heart hurts; I’m tired. I can’t fight no more, so I’m calling my friends Jazz and Deneka, and I’m hysterical.” And as for Uber? Well, she’d forgotten to end the ride, so her GPS kept telling her to turn back round and finish it!
So Bree drove off, perhaps having inherited some new luggage in the process! She considered getting a consignment store to clear it out, but in the end she decided to turn the possessions in to the police. But not before she’d texted photographs of herself posing in the other woman’s eyewear to her boyfriend.
The story doesn’t have an unhappy ending, though, although Bree was certainly unhappy to find out her boyfriend had been cheating on her. The internet loved it, giving her the nickname of #UberBae. And the tale went viral, attracting comments from observers, such as, “How many ladies filling out Uber applications after reading about #UberBae?”
Another Twitter user just couldn’t believe the whole tale, writing, “Nah. How did I miss the #UberBae story? How do you fly your side piece out, and her Uber driver from the airport ends up being your girl?” That’s not quite the end of the story: as Bree revealed to her Twitter fans, “She called the police.”
UberBae told entertainment website Complex in March 2017, “There is a police report filed. So, what I told them, ’cause she has no proof that I have her things, was ‘I do believe somebody left something in my car when they came to my job,’ and it was a bag. A trash bag, basically, is what I gave them. Her luggage — what luggage?”
The woman didn’t in the end feel able to press charges, although according to Bree, a complaint was filed with the police. Bree told Complex why there were no charges, saying, “But she can’t press charges against me! She charged at me first. That apartment complex has, like, heavy cameras to see that.”
Now you might be curious as to why Bree hadn’t suspected something was up earlier. As she later told website Bustle, “I actually felt dumb that I wasn’t asking more questions, but what are the odds of this happening?” One less-than-ideal outcome for Bree was that she no longer had a gig with Uber.
The woman gave her a one-star review, and as she told Complex, “I guess they asked her what happened. She filed a complaint against me. She’s supposed to be sending them a police report saying I stole her things and a whole bunch of stuff. So…they said I need to start answering in order to get back on the road to start earning money. They shut me down.”
But if Uber wasn’t on Bree’s side in this dispute, lots of other people were. Women who’ve suffered from cheating boyfriends lined up to defend her. She told Bustle, “Everything has been positive. A lot of women have shared their experiences, and I talked to a lot of girls going through the same thing.”
And what about the boyfriend? Did Bree forgive him and forget all about the incident? Well, she tweeted about that too. She wrote, “By the way, I am single now.” She told website The Daily Beast that she was done with it — and was changing her number! Bree’s lucky that her boyfriend showed his true colors before it was too late…
